Ministry of Commerce: Chinese and Caribbean Enterprises Are Actively Exploring Cooperation Opportunities in Clean Energy, Energy Storage and Other Fields.

On September 9, the Ministry of Commerce held a special press conference for the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum. Wang Qi, deputy director of the cooperation department of the Ministry of Commerce, introduced the cooperation between China and Caribbean countries and pointed out that the enterprises of both sides are cleaning energy, energy storage actively explore cooperation opportunities in other fields.

Wang Qi said that although China and Caribbean countries are far away from each other and tens of thousands of miles apart, with the joint efforts of all relevant departments, local governments and enterprises of both sides, investment cooperation in various fields has been continuously deepened in recent years and maintained a good momentum of development, it has set a model of equal treatment and friendly cooperation between large and small countries.

First, China's investment in Caribbean countries has increased steadily. By the end of 2023, China's direct investment stock in Caribbean countries reached more than 3 billion US dollars, covering processing and manufacturing, infrastructure, transportation, medical and health care, trade and logistics, clean energy and other industries, create more than 3,000 jobs directly for the local. Sugar, shoe and luggage enterprises invested and established by Chinese-funded enterprises in Jamaica, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and other countries, new landmark projects in the capital invested and developed in the Bahamas, A number of projects such as the construction and operation of the North-South Expressway in Jamaica have come into bloom one after another, making positive contributions to local economic development, foreign exchange earning from exports, tax revenue, employment expansion and people's livelihood improvement.

Second, bilateral cooperation in infrastructure has achieved remarkable results. By the end of 2023, Chinese enterprises had completed contracted projects in Caribbean countries with a turnover of more than 18 billion US dollars, including transportation, industry, energy, mining, electricity, communications, tourism, medical and health care, housing and other fields have successively implemented a number of landmark projects and "small but beautiful" livelihood projects. For example, new Aviation Building, V.C. Bird International Airport, St. John's deepwater port, Alima General Hospital, Trinidad and TobagoProjects such as the upgrading and transformation of coastal roads in southern Jamaica and the reconstruction of roads along the east coast of demolala in Guiana have effectively promoted the upgrading of local infrastructure and facilitated people's travel, production and life, it has become a bright business card for economic and trade cooperation between China and Caribbean countries.

Third, investment cooperation in emerging areas is in the ascendant. Chinese enterprises actively participate in the construction of information expressways in Jamaica, Suriname and other countries to help local digital transformation. The Phoenix Industrial Park project jointly built by Chinese enterprises and Trinidad and Tobago has become the first industrial park in the Caribbean to achieve 5G network coverage, laying an information fast lane for enterprises entering the park. Caribbean island countries are deeply affected by climate change and attach great importance to energy transformation and sustainable development. Enterprises of both sides are actively exploring cooperation opportunities in clean energy, energy storage and other fields. Chinese enterprises have invested or undertaken projects such as biomass power stations and photovoltaic power stations in Cuba, Guiana, Suriname and other countries, it has played a positive role in the Caribbean island country's response to gas change and green development.

In short, China and Caribbean countries have strong economic complementarities and broad cooperation space. We will continue to strengthen policy docking and information exchange with Caribbean countries, deepen industrial chain supply chain cooperation in infrastructure, green development, digital economy, blue economy and other fields, to provide greater support for promoting local economic development and improving people's livelihood.

In addition, according to Meng Yue, deputy director of the foreign trade department of the Ministry of Commerce, the trade of green products between China and Caribbean countries grew rapidly. 2018-2023, China exports to Caribbean countries new energy vehicle about 4,000 vehicles in total, exported lithium battery and photovoltaic products cumulative amount of $0.85 billion.
