Export Analysis of Lithium Batteries in Guangdong Province in the First Half of 2024

time:2024-09-04

According to customs statistics, in the first half of 2024, Guangdong province exported lithium-ion batteries (hereinafter referred to as" lithium battery") 44.86 billion RMB, down 14.8% from the same period last year (the same below).

In the first half of 2024, the main characteristics of lithium battery exports in Guangdong province were as follows: first, the export of general trade mode accounted for nearly 80%. Export 34.94 billion yuan in general trade, down 14.4%, accounting for 77.9% of the gross export value lithium batteries in Guangdong province (the same below) in the same period; Export 9.44 billion yuan in processing trade, down 16.6%, accounting for 21%. Second, private enterprises account for more than 70% of exports. Private enterprises exported 33.84 billion yuan, up 2.6 percent, accounting for 75.4 percent; Foreign-invested enterprises exported 9.93 billion yuan, down 45.6 percent, accounting for 22.1 percent; State-owned enterprises exported 1.09 billion yuan, down 22.7 percent, 2.4%. Third, the European Union, the United States, ASEAN and India are the main export markets. Exports to EU were 13.46 billion yuan, down 11.4%, accounting for 30%; Exports to us were 8 billion yuan, down 7.8%, accounting for 17.8%; Exports to ASEAN were 6.26 billion yuan, up 37.3%, accounted for 14%; Exports to India were 2.71 billion yuan, down 8%, accounting for 6%.

Noteworthy situations:

first, affected by the policy, the export of lithium batteries to European and American markets declined. In the first half of the year, the export of domestic lithium batteries was affected by various policies, resulting in a decline in exports. The United States has passed the inflation Reduction Act and implemented trade protectionism. According to the foreign subsidy regulations, the European Union has successively launched anti-subsidy investigations on China's new energy fields such as photovoltaic, wind power and electric vehicles, and after the new battery law came into effect, it raised the trade threshold to some extent. These policies have led Chinese lithium battery enterprises to face higher tariffs and trade barriers when entering the European and American markets, thus reducing the export of lithium batteries to Europe and America.

The second is the release of ASEAN's demand for energy storage and power batteries, and the export of lithium batteries to ASEAN has steadily increased. With the continuous growth of energy demand, Southeast Asia's fossil energy resources are insufficient, there is a gap in power supply, and electricity prices are relatively low.Problems such as high power and imperfect power grid construction are highlighted. In order to ensure the stability of power supply and improve the energy utilization rate, the demand for energy storage also rises accordingly. Meanwhile, in order to further promote the development of electric vehicle industry in the region, ASEAN countries proposed to establish a comprehensive regional Electric Vehicle Ecosystem. At the 42nd ASEAN summit in May this year, leaders of ASEAN countries proposed to build ASEAN into a global electric vehicle production center through the joint statement on the development of regional Electric Vehicle Ecosystem, which will further promote the growth of lithium battery demand.

The third is the emergence of comprehensive electric demand, creating new volume for lithium battery enterprises and promoting the recovery of lithium battery exports. In June this year, the export of lithium batteries in Guangdong province was 9.24 billion yuan, an increase of 0.4% over the same period last year, the first year-on-year increase this year. At the same time, many lithium battery enterprises have signed new cooperation orders overseas, which will promote the recovery of lithium battery exports. In the field of electric toy motorcycle and two-wheeler, fu neng technology signed a strategic cooperation agreement on power batteries with southeast asian power exchange operators and indian new energy companies to expand the electric toy motorcycle and two-wheeler power exchange markets in southeast asia and south asia; BYD reached a cooperation agreement with African electric vehicle new energy technology company Ampersand to become its main battery supplier; In the field of ship electrification, it announced that many large international merchant ships would launch and test the launch of the battery products of China Innovation airlines.
