California Battery Energy Storage System Is on Fire and Is Expected to Be Completely Burned in 48 Hours.

time:2024-09-09

On September 5, a container battery energy storage system in California Escondido in the United States broke out.

According to public information, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) instructed all power companies in Southern California investors to speed up the construction of energy storage projects in 2016 to improve the safety and reliability of local energy supply. In response, SDG & E accelerated the ongoing negotiations in 2017 and signed a contract with AES Energy Storage to build two 37.5 MW lithium battery energy storage facilities, one of which is the 30MW energy storage project of Escondido (Escondido) in this fire. It is reported that the project adopts AES Advancion energy storage system.

According to Tyler Batson, head of the fire department of Escondido, firefighters received the fire notice for the first time at 12:09 Noon and rushed to the scene quickly after receiving the alarm and smoke report. Not only that, in order to deal with the lithium ion battery fire accident, the dangerous goods handling team members of San Diego County rushed to the scene to deal with it.

It is understood that as of 4 pm on that day, the fire was still burning and had not been extinguished. Taylor Batson said firefighters were trying to put out the fire, but the container battery energy storage system was still burning.

Taylor Batson pointed out that if spraying water on the burning energy storage battery may make the problem worse, so their intervention measures are mainly concentrated in the area around the fire, this is in line with the current best practices for dealing with lithium battery fires.

To be on the safe side, Escondido municipal authorities said that after the fire, San Diego County officials issued evacuation orders to the area between Rd and Auto Park Way near Enterprise Mission. EnterpThe road near rise St is closed. And issued local refuge instructions for the larger area around the site.

Later, San Diego Natural Gas Power Company (SDG & E) issued a statement saying: "This afternoon, security personnel responded promptly to the fire at the SDG & E energy storage facility located in Escondido, and after the fire broke out, the advanced fire extinguishing system was started immediately. The fire was limited to one of the 24 energy storage system containers. At present, there are no reports of injuries, and emergency rescue workers have arrived at the scene. SDG & E is working with rescue personnel to ensure the safety of employees and communities, and will conduct a thorough review of the incident to determine the cause of the accident.

It is understood that there is no more detailed information so far, including the cause of the fire in the energy storage system.

According to Batson, the staff will stay at the scene until the fire completely subsides. It is estimated that in the best case, the fire will go out in about 12 hours, and in the worst case, it will take about 48 hours.

It is reported that AES is a well-known energy storage system integrator in the United States. According to the official website, AES created energy storage technology on the grid scale 15 years ago. It was officially put into operation on February 24, 2017. The installed capacity of the project was 30MW/120MWh, mainly in line with peak shaving of natural gas power plants, which created the world's largest battery energy storage project record at that time.
