All-Solid-State Battery High-Capacity Cathode Materials Have Made Important Progress

Data shows that sulfide all-solid-state battery has the advantages of high energy density, fast charge and discharge, excellent low temperature performance, high safety, long service life and so on, and solves a series of problems such as low energy density, inflammable and explosive of liquid lithium battery, it shows its application potential in electric vehicles and other fields and becomes a disruptive world cutting-edge technology.

The advanced energy storage materials and technology research group of Qingdao Energy Institute is based on industrial demand, and has been deeply engaged in the research and development of sulfide all-solid-state batteries for many years. Recently, the high specific energy long cycle all-solid-state lithium sulphur battery based on lithium sulfide positive electrode has been developed, the energy density of the battery exceeds 600 Wh/kg. Compared with commercial lithium ion batteries, their energy density is more than twice higher. Moreover, because rare metals are not used, the high cost problem of lithium battery cathode material is completely solved.
Not only that, the positive electrode of lithium sulfide shows a high specific capacity of 1165.23 mAh g-1, which is close to the theoretical value of 1167 mAh g-1. After 6200 cycles at room temperature, its capacity can still remain 84.4%. After assembling the full battery with commercial Si-C negative electrode, the specific discharge capacity of 400 cycles at room temperature still remains above 97% of the initial capacity. These important findings indicate that sulfide all-solid-state batteries have certain commercial value and broad market prospects.
